Lower back pain affects approximately 80% of adults at some point, making it one of the most common health complaints. Understanding the root causes is essential for effective treatment.

Mechanical Causes

The majority of lower back pain stems from mechanical issues: muscle strain, ligament sprains, and postural problems. Lifting heavy objects with poor form, prolonged sitting, or sudden movements can trigger acute pain.

Degenerative disc disease and herniated discs become more common with age. The spinal discs lose water content and elasticity, reducing their shock-absorbing capacity. When a disc herniates, it can press on nerves, causing localized and radiating pain.

Movement and Prevention

Stay active rather than resting completely. Gentle movement—walking, swimming, and yoga—maintains muscle strength and flexibility. A weak core allows the spine to assume poor positioning. Core strengthening exercises, performed 3-4 times weekly, significantly reduce pain recurrence.

Postural awareness throughout the day prevents cumulative strain. Sitting with your spine against the chair back, keeping your screen at eye level, and taking regular standing breaks all reduce disk stress.

When to Seek Help

Most acute lower back pain resolves within 4-6 weeks. Seek medical attention if pain is accompanied by numbness, loss of bladder control, or progressive weakness. Imaging is typically not necessary unless these symptoms are present.

Long-Term Management

Regular strength training, flexibility work, and stress management create resilience. Many people find that consistent effort prevents recurring episodes far more effectively than treating pain after it develops.
